the policy here is to block all internet mail (because of the risk of
viruses. never mind that they use exchange and outlook here - don't
get me started...)

Is there a way of access gmail in a text only mode, that doesn't
involve mail.google.com?

Just do what i do, go to www.ug8.org, nothing will be blocked. if that
site is blocked go to www.ilikeproxys.com atleast one should be
unblocked.
