If you have Google Bar installed, there is an option to/not to
highlight the terms you entered in the search field : Settings / Plus
(? third icon : my GTB version is french) / fifth checkbox

Try to uncheck it and see if highlights disappeared.

Thanks for your suggestion but I use Opera (it's by far the fastest
browser on this tired old machine) so I can't have the Google Toolbar.
