Yahoo, MSN groups would be better to be checked out to check out or meet people online.

Well there are practically hundreds of places to chat with people, you can use IRC, MSN, Yahoo Messenger, forums, Blogs and many more.

Google these terms and I'm sure you'd get it all going in no time.

MSN messenger is probably the most popular among your older crowd and people that work online. AOL's instant messenger is more popular among the younger crowd.

However if you already know who you want to chat with, just ask them what program they are using.

MSN, Yahoo, Forums are the best sources for chat. Somehow I don't prefer MSN and mostly prefer Yahoo.

One thing you might want to do is look up some interests you have. For instance, if you are a huge music fan, search MSN or Yahoo about music and find a group dedicated to your interests. It must be amazing to be doing these things for the first time, enjoy!

There is a chat client called Pidgin that allows you to log into several instant message programs at once. It doesn't wrok for chat rooms, though.

A few years back I used something similar, I think it was called Trillian, and it combined three or four of the major IM's.
