Default Homosexuality in google. - 06-04-2007, 05:43 AM

I'm appalled by the sheer volume of homophobic content that appears on
Google when searching for genuine scientific research on the matter.
NARTH appears first on the list for homosexuality and parenting.

No real psychologist or researcher worth their salt would approve of
this.

Surely something can be done? I have a feeling that there's some reason
why they are so prominent. I know there are a few tricks to get sites
higher up the list an I wouldn't put it beyond them.

Please try to fix this ASAP. I would like to think that Google gives a
greater regard to "facts" over "opinions".

Google has algorithms to show what's most "relevent" to a specific
query.

Example: From on-page perspective, when someone searches for "2+2", a
page saying 2+2=10 is just as good of a result as a page saying
"2+2=4".

Other than "onpage relevency", Google also considers "Popularity" and
"Authority", which could mean anything from length of domain to number
of external links pointing them. The pages that you said were
homophobic and on top of Google search results page must be really
relevent to the search query, and "popular" according to other
users/webmasters. Unless you come up with something more relevent,
popular, and authoritative, you're not gonna change the results too
easily, sorry.

Oh yeah, here's an example of how "web popularity" works: Google
keyword "miserable failure" and look at first result.

Fix what? Google (and all other search engines) return results relevant
to a query. They index what is on the www. They are not the internet
police. How is Google supposed to know that you are searching for
scientirfic content vs searching for a homophobic hate site?

Sorry, but it absolutely is their job. The results are not relevant to
what I'm searching for. Therefore, Google is inefficent. Google SHOULD
know what I'm looking for because it SHOULD be putting such homophobic
nonsense further down the pile anyway.

Google are the only ones who have the power to filter content in this
manner. And yes, it can be done. I'm sure it has been implemented for
several other things. It is simply shameful that NARTH turns top of the
list, it's almost definitely because of some trickery or other.

What if Google got into a scandle over Child Porn? What would happen
then?

Google "points to the information" people are searching for, they don't
actually provide any information.

If you don't like the first result, look at the 2nd, or 3rd, instead of
complaining about a specific result. It seems like enough people like
the Narth site to make it popular enough to be in the first page of
Google SERPs.

Google is a search engine - not the internet police.

If Google does not return what you are looking for, why blame Google?
How about blame yourself for your search skills.

As Google's market share is actually increasing, they must be providing
what most searchers are looking for. Get over it.
