Default com vs co.uk - 06-04-2007, 05:04 AM

I have a UK based website that comes up on the first page of Google
when searching all of Google but does not appear at all any more when
specifying the UK only which is the way that most of my customers will
start a search to avoid sites that would not apply to them.

Can you help?

its happening to an ever increasing amount of .coms
There are quite a few threads on the subject in
http://groups.google.com/group/Googl...31899b49b44015

Will google please advise whether .coms are being moved permanently
from regional searches in google.uk?

Wouldn't make sense. There are a lo of .coms quite legitimately based
in the UK. I registered sievers.com years ago and had a fight with a
company of the same name in the USA who tried to wrest it from me.
During adjudication I pointed out that _we_ were active multinationally
but _they_ weren't and should use .co.us - and I won.

But this site is probably the victim of an algo change. First of all:

<meta name="description" content="" />
<meta name="keywords" content="" />
<meta name="robots" content="ALL" />
<title>www.drchapmanexpert.com</title>

a) The description tag will break the <head> for some agents. The
DOCTYPE is HTML, not XHTML. The validator is your friend.

http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=ww...pmanexpert.com

b) There's very little indexable text on the page and a lot of
superfluous HTML. The style sheet should be externalised, for
instance.

c) Use the tags - especially title and description. If you have a
couple of idle minutes, do keywords as well, but don't go mad. The
robots tag is superfluous.

d) Read http://www.seologic.com/faq/hidden-text.php - especially Note 2
under Style Sheets. You have "visibility: hidden" on that page.

It is listed in google.co.uk when searching for 'pages from Uk' - it
just does not rank as well

Thats strange i'm sure when i searched it was not there, however as
you correctly point out now it is. However this may be the begining of
its complete removal as we underwent a similar experience for a while,
of sometimes in and sometimes out.
As an illustration of the missing .com sydndrome if you search in
google.uk for 'silver jewellery' with 'the web' radio button selected,
on the first two pages of the results you get zoojewellery.com,
jazzitupjewellery.com, dhanish.com, silverstall.com, silver.uk.com all
of whom are UK based hosting on Uk servers. Yet if you select 'pages
from the UK' radio button they all dissappear. A 'site' command will
show that whilst most of their pages are still in the 'pages from the
uk' index, their main index page is not.
Whilst i was prepared to accept that in the case of
www.silverstall.com this could have been caused by canonical issues,
bad page naming etc i cannot accept that all those sites have similar,
coincidental problems.
The same can be true for other search terms where a lot of .coms have
been recently removed. Can anyone shed any light on this issue?
