Default A new Google tab: "Wikipedia" - 06-04-2007, 04:45 AM

As Wikipedia has been becoming the number one source of online
knowledge, I think Google should promote it by adding a "Wikipedia" tab
besides "Web", "Images", "Groups", "News", etc. Exposing Wikipedia as a
search scope could virtually bring Wikipedia to EVERYONE just like what
Google has done with the good old Usenet.

What's in the dictionary search ("define:someword") for Google? It's
just another way to make Google more useful.

For money, Google can simply display the resulting Wikipedia page with
AdSense ads.

That would be a great idea. Google does give a lot of weight to links
from Wikipedia articles.

I also found that a competitor of Google in China, Baidu.com, already
provides a wiki-based encyclopedia (Baidu Baike) as one of its search
tabs.

Also note that Wikipedia.org is blocked by China's Great Firewall. So
if Google can officially support Wikipedia as a tab, it would largely
increase the Chinese netzens' awareness of Wikipedia. Google could also
mirror Wikipedia contents as if they're normal results pages.

Microsoft's Windows Live Search also indirectly implemented this by
enabling "search macros" which are currently considered as custom
search tabs and spotlighting a search macro for Wikipedia in its Macro
Gallery.
