Does Google free search help in getting indexed. My client,
http://www.cutiecoo.co.uk wants a search function. I could spend a lot
of time writing one but thought about using Google's offering.
However, for reasons unknown (and debated elsewhere), Google only ever
returns one result for the web site. Presumably this means that Google
free search will not work either.

Does anybody know of any other alternative? Maybe web services based?

I would use MSN search. They have most of your pages indexed:
http://search.msn.com/docs/siteowner....htm&FORM=ASRE
If you know how to program, use the api:

or
