Default GoogleEarth Cache file path - 05-14-2007, 01:10 PM

Dear Mr, Ms,

As one of the system administrators of a large educational facility i
implemented Google Earth onto some 400 workstations in our Active
Directory domain. We are experiencing some problems with file storage,
namingly the cache file of Google Earth.

The students (users) log on and start up Google Earth, after which the
program puts it's cache in the dbcache.dat file. This file is located
in the c:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application
Data\Google\GoogleEarth\ folder.

The problem is that all of our user profiles (Windows XP clients and
Windows Server 2003 servers) are stored on the fileserver. With more
than 800 students this is starting to take up too much of the
fileserver's diskspace.

Of course, enabling disk quota's is an option, but i went on examining
where Google Earth stores it's settings, especially, where it stores
the cache file. Found out that you can select the amount of cacheing on
the disk and in the memory on the cache page in the program's settings.
This has to be set per user, so it's kind of impossible to do for 800
students. In the registry, the cachefile path is stored in HK Current
User\Software\Google\Google Earth Plus\. So, this also has to be set
per user, where it could be done using an exported file from the
registry and enforcing it using scripting of some kind.

I am pretty sure we're not the only one using Google Earth for
educational reasons, and i hope someone out there can supply me with a
fitting solution.

Greets,

Thadeez
