Default Utility to Monitor Web Site - 05-14-2007, 01:52 AM

Is there a utility that will remotely test for the existance of a
particular file on a Windows server? We are trying to find a way to
monitor when our shared server is down. Because some of our problems
appear to be caused by rogue scripts and spammers on the same server, a
simple ping will not work. PingPlotter does a great job of pinging, but
it will not necessarily tell us if the server is actually serving the
web site content.

We use http://www.siteuptime.com for monitoring our server at work. You
can get it to ping or check via HTTP at regular intervals. I think the
"free service" will do it every 30 mins or hourly can't remember which,
but we use the paid service and it checks every five minutes

Servers Alive (aka salive) is a neat tool and the free version can
monitor 10 things with full functionality. The commercial version is
amazingly cheap.

Why not fetch the file? You can easily FTP it, check it was retrieved,
delete it, then do it again at a period in the future.

Just signed up with them. Now I have to make sure that I set it up
correctly.

Thanks for the suggestion.
