Default what is the best for revenue? - 05-14-2007, 01:50 AM

I'm currently building/designing my first "real(with a actual domain)"
website and I was wondering what is the best option for creating revenue.
It is a computing/computer related webpage and I was wondering if selling
content or advertising with free content is the best way or any other
methods. I appreciate any advice and I will post the url upon completion
for critique if that is allowed. Thanks in advance.

Something of real value that people are really willing to trade for
their hard earned cash.

What would you be doing to create revenue if you were not on the net?

> I was wondering if selling content

Is it of real value? Will people really be willing to pay for it?

> advertising with free content is the best way

There is already enough free advertising on the net. People aren't
likely to pay you for to see more of it.

Seriously. Think of this as a business, not a web site. If you don't
have a viable business, you won't have a viable web site.

Selling an actual, tangible product.

Selling content has proven a miserable failure unless it is pr0n.

Go for advertising and affiliate programs.

They also aren't all that lucrative. Your earlier advice:

is the best advice.

Thanks for the advice. I dont have a whole lot of money to spend to invest
in any kind of product. If you have any Ideas how to get around that I
could sure use the advice. My main goal is to mabey use it kinda like a
portfolio page to show what I can do and maybe luck into a job doing web
development. I dont have a degree or any certifications. If there is any
advice in that department I would be greatful.

You are not thinking like a business owner, yet you expect to make money
on line. A little money may trickle in, but if you want to make a living
on line, you will have to run your business like a real business. If you
went into business off line, what would you do? Can you do that on line?

There are three keys to professional success. 1) Find something you love
to do. 2) Become very good at it. 3) Find a way to get people to pay you
to do it.

You seem to be taking a different approach. 1) Build a website. 2)
figure out what you can do to make it generate income. 3) Hope and kick
and scream that the money magically comes rolling in.

It doesn't work that way.

I sell a service/product. The service is that of generating a paper
based product electronically and delivering in PDF format. (No, this is
not a 'buy my report' scam. It is a real service/product used by
educators.) I have very little overhead. I don't have any inventory. I
spend my working day writing code to expand my offerings. I am the only
person on the net who does what I do the way I do it.

It took time to build the business. I ran the site as a hobby for 8
years before I attracted enough traffic to the site to consider charging
money. It took another year before the site earned enough money to
support my family. During the last two years I have increased the
offerings on the site nine-fold. My site is a full-time job. I run it as
a business.

I had my portfolio on the net for years and never made a dime off of it.
There are a lot of people who have posted a portfolio on the net and are
waiting for someone to contact them. It doesn't work that way. I tried
"lucking into" jobs for several years and almost went broke.

> I dont have a degree or any certifications.

That shouldn't matter, if you are good at what you do.

> If there is any advice in that department I would be greatful.

If you want to do web development as a business, you need to have a way
to market yourself off line. An on line portfolio would only be one tool
you would use to market yourself.

I, thankfully, am not doing web development for other people anymore.

I think I need to clarify, my main interest is to earn enough(i.e. through
googleadsense, affilate programs, etc) to support the site right
now.(i.e. hosting cost $10 a month) and how to get enough traffic. My url
isn't even indexed by google yet.

Other than word of mouth what other ways are good?
