And on a further note to that:

What is the brain's trust opinion of
http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-CSS2/media.html 7.2.1?

Support for the media attribute on mobile platforms is very iffy. While
some will use it media=handheld, others think they know better and use
media=screen. There are still others that try weird combinations of them,
trying one and if not present, trying the other; or using both and
resolving the conflicts between them in unpredictable ways (i.e. not the
method specified by the CSS rec).

Note: for testing "media=handheld" style sheets, Opera will display pages
using them when in Small Screen Rendering mode. (In Medium Screen
Rendering mode I believe it uses "media=tv" if available, and then falls
back to "media=screen", but I could be wrong on this.)

Out of the most popular mobile browsers, only Opera and OpenWave use
handheld media CSS when it is available.

Take note of the irony which is the obsessively pro-Firefox Slashdot
taking the time to actually include a handheld stylesheet, only to have it
ignored by the Mozilla mobile browser, Minimo.

Well, this is one of the crucial questions. Is it likely to get better
(more pervasive) or not?

After all, slow adoption was the nemesis of WML.

And what's the best way to go? It occurs to me that the best solution
would be a single multi-purpose style sheet as described in
http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-CSS2/media.html 7.2.1 - for my applications,
this would still be rather small. I'm not doing very much in CSS.

In many ways, I'm moving backwards. We used to use the Nokia
Communicator which had a version of Opera and would happily deal even
with quite crappily-written HTML. But the damn things are too fragile.
