Default How I started a Web Hosting Business - 05-14-2007, 01:28 AM

About a few months ago I made an attempt to start my own hosting
company and I bombed out big time. I registered the domain name, and
thought it would be a good idea to have my own servers, having NO
experience, knowledge, or even a website -- it didn't take very long to
realize I made a mistake.

A couple weeks later I decide to give it another try. I need to design
my website. I could have gone and bought my own template because they
are cheap, they look nice, and it's easy to edit. But I didn't want
my design skills to go to waste. I have always like flash intros but I
didn't want it to be on a single page, so I made it in my header.
Everything was going smoothly until I realized I need a way to host the
websites. I could either host them from a dedicated server, but then I
would have to install all my own applications and keep the servers
up-to-date. I was thinking of signing up for it until I stumbled across
the idea of a reseller program. They are cheap and are just what you
need to start off. I went ahead and got my plan. I got the minimum one
because I don't have any customers right now so it a waste of money,
and I can always upgrade later. The plan came with a decent amount of
bandwidth and space and great support. I uploaded my website to my
server and my company was now running. www.unidoxhosting.com

I was now having trouble finding customers let alone customers finding
me. I had to start an advertising campaign. I went to most of the other
competitors and asked for a link exchange but it failed horribly. I
bought some books and read online on some ways to get your rank up but
they were expensive and not what I needed. I then had the idea to
sponsor some gaming clans to get my name out. I sponsored Team
Redemption and Clan - EGC. Redemption was a full sponsorship because
they have good ranks. I gave them free domain and web hosting,
including design. Clan - EGC, I gave a discounted price to. They
didn't have the best rank but I got to know them and they are great.
That is my best form of advertising for now, and I think it is the way
to go.

After I sponsored those two clans my name was spread. I got my 1st new
customer and I found out it was a huge pain to file/organize and
process it manually. I stumbled across Modern Bill software that is
made for hosting businesses. It was very easy to integrate and it
automatically billed and charges my customers. Modern Bill was a bit
difficult to configure and set up on my server but I eventually figured
it out. I would have had my reseller host install it the next time to
save time and effort.

After I setup the new billing software I had my next couple of
customers and they were not easy at all to deal with. My support was
great but I found out doing it all myself was a big pain. I had to hire
two workers each with an 8 hour shift so it split between us. I was
also starting to doubt myself. I kept saying to myself "can I do
this?", "will this work out?" This is the point I am at right now and
I am getting the hang of it. I don't think Unidox Hosting will stop
anytime soon. There is no other way to go than up!

Through all of this I've learned that there is much more to this
industry then I thought. I'm still progressing and improving. I still
need to get out some heavy advertising. But as long as I keep taking
steps forward, things can only get better.

no hsit huh?

Peace, Kent!

Come not between the dragon and his wrath.
I loved her most, and thought to set my rest
On her kind nursery. Hence, and avoid my sight!
So be my grave my peace, as here I give
Her father's heart from her! Call France; who stirs?
Call Burgundy. Cornwall and Albany,
With my two daughters' dowers digest this third:
Let pride, which she calls plainness, marry her.
I do invest you jointly with my power,
Pre-eminence, and all the large effects
That troop with majesty. Ourself, by monthly course,
With reservation of an hundred knights,
By you to be sustain'd, shall our abode
Make with you by due turns. Only we still retain
The name, and all the additions to a king;
The sway, revenue, execution of the rest,
Beloved sons, be yours: which to confirm,
This coronet part betwixt you.

What a great way to help him, by not only quoting his rambling novella, but
also by keeping his spammed URL in tact. Go you.

Get yourself a business plan template. Fill it out completely and read and
follow the conclusions generated.
i.e., you're in the wrong business.

It only took me this far to come to the same conclusion. How can you
possibly consider going into business in an area that you admit to
having no experience in? I certainly wouldn't choose a random person off
the street to perform surgery on me, so why would I choose a similarly
experienced person to host my websites?

I would have to say, that most of the hosting companies I deal with are
similarly incompetent. Not knowing what you're doing can hardly be
considered a barrier in this business.

The real issues are these:

It's a crowded market. It's filled with hundreds of established
competitors.

Most of the competitors are streamlined, and low cost; think 1and1. You're
not going to be able to differentiate on cost alone. Even if you could,
this is a dead-end.

So, the real question is: What makes you different? What product or
service are you going to offer that few or no others are? Alternatively,
what market or segment do you have special knowledge of that you could
tailor your service to?

If you can't answer the questions in the last paragraph, be prepared to go
out of business.
