Default Keywords and Descriptions - 05-14-2007, 01:27 AM

Hello,
Is it search engine friendly to have each page on my site have
different keywords and descriptions on its meta tags?

For example:

http://destinationsguide.info/catalogue/c51/c57/c92 - this page talks
about zambia and I want to define more specific keywords for this page,
rather then use the default root entry.

Cheers

Norman

Norman

Your keywords need to reflect the pages content. Do yours? Your
keywords do not appear in your page text, image alts or links and as
such you will score no points for relevance.

Make them very specific and remember content is king.

Each page is a URL treat it as such... Good luck.

Description is now and then used for showing the page snippet (Google).

As for keywords, why put them in a meta element, and not in the page
itself? Write natural, and then reread and see if you missed out a keyword
or two. This happens easily, because "we" write with a context in our
head, for example, when I write "Black widow" I mean a spider. In the
beginning I wrote mostly stuff like "I saw a black widow hiding under a
stone". Now I write "I saw a black widow spider hiding under a volcanic
stone". However, try to keep it readable.

Thanks, I made some changes to the code, I now have ALT tags on all the
images, they are based on the title of the page.

Is it OK to have the same ALT tag on images, per page?

Thanks John,

Yes the description will be generated from the actual snippet, for
example http://destinationsguide.info/catalo...c57?b_start=15 ,
will be the short description for Zambia on the Zambia page.

It will be a natural text.

In regards to ALT tags, can I use the same ALT tag or is this not good?

Cheers

The best thing is that the alt tag somehow describes the image for
visitors who don't see images (for one reason or another). It might get a
bit boring if you have 20 images and each has exactly the same text.

If you're too lazy to be creative, hire someone. A website means for most
people a lot of hard work. Only a few can sit on their *** and make a load
of money with almost no work. Hey, it's almost like real life...

keywords tag is way to general, I would drop it at all.

<title>Eastern Africa</title>

Eastern Africa at destinations guide (for example)

<span cl***="normal">Eastern Africa at</span> <a
href="http://destinationsguide.info/catalogue">Destinations Guide</a>,
<a href="http://destinationsguide.info/catalogue/c51">Africa</a>

make that <h1>Eastern Africa at <a ...> <a...></h1>

<a href="http://destinationsguide.info/catalogue/c51/c57/c91">
<img
src="http://destinationsguide.info/catalogue/c51/c57/c91/cp15/?size=
75x75&amp;helper=1164464166.37" alt="United Rep. of Tanzania"
border="0" height="56" width="75">

make that <h2><a ..>United Republic of Tanzania</a></h2>

Why images?
Why rep.?

Finally, use mod_rewrite to turn:

http://destinationsguide.info/catalo...c57?b_start=15

into

http://destinationsguide.info/catalo...rn-africa.html

or

http://destinationsguide.info/catalo...eastern-africa

or

http://destinationsguide.info/catalo...astern-africa/

And alt text "Zimbabwe" is not good for what looks like a crocodile.
Better: Crocodile basking in the sun, Zimbabwe

"upon hundreds of species of tropical wildlife"

Maybe name a few? (A crocodile for example)

Yes - as hinted at elsewhere in this thread, keywords, description and
title should all be bespoke for the page upon (within?) which they reside.

unlikely - and quite unhelpful too if those images are also links.

correct use of the ALT attribute has been discussed many times - take a
peek in the archive.

Oh yes, don't ignore the title attribute - and please make sure that you
understand the difference between intended use of the ALT & TITLE
attributes.

In any event, have fun.

Thanks all

One question, CSS related

On John's suggestions to use H2 instead of <span> for the sub-heading
lists

quote:
<h2><a ..>United Republic of Tanzania</a></h2>

I am unsure how to do the css for this:

here is the code

<span tal:repeat="sub python:here.listSubCategories(attribute='name')">
<a href="" tal:attributes="href sub/catalogueItemURL"
tal:content="sub/name">sub category name</a>
<span tal:condition="python:not repeat['sub'].end">|</span>
</span>

If I wrap the <H2> arround this then you get or replace the first span
with H2, I get:

Sub category Name
|
Sub category Name
|
Sub category Name
....

rather than Sub category Name | Sub category Name Sub category Name
etc...

Any thoughts

Cheers

Norman
