Lots of "legitimate" software companies are shoving teh google or
yahoo tool bar into their downloads or updates.

It's un-necessary junk. There are extensions for Firefox that are
far more useful and less "tracking" than anything by google or yahoo.
And they are specifically "illegal" in most corporate environments.

require IE with all of its gaping security holes, I'm going to dump all

Wow. Is this the same Peter Moylan who used to be a computer
professional? Maybe my ageing memory is playing tricks on me. Let's
see... OK, in ten seconds of checking my Google toolbar (which, like
others, I always choose to install because it's so useful) I found:

which gives several ways in which the hopelessly technophobic can
reduce the functionality of their system by uninstalling the Google
toolbar.
