Default domain name not resolving with www, but OK without it - help !! - 06-02-2007, 07:53 PM

Hello
I run my own webserver and my isp frequently changes the ip, so I have
to update the new information with my domain name registry.
Well, it happened again this morning, and I updated the domain name
info, now all of a sudden I cannot access any of the sites I host with
a www prefix, they work ok without it. Odd thing is that I can do
either from the actual machine where the sites are hosted, but can't
from another one on the same network.
Here is one of the domain names, and I'm curious to see what anyone
outside my network can see or can't see
barbhall.com or www.barbhall.com

Also, any idea what might cause this problem - nothing at all was
changed in the webserver config file, and anything in front of
barbhall.com should resolve to the same ip

Did a tracert on both names and they both resolve to different ip's -
one to the old one, and the other to the new one

a ping has the same result

Please help !!

Thanks, and sorry if this is the wrong group

works fine, both ways.

your dns hasn't updated at your isp, evidentally.

<snip>

Have you considered using a dynamic-dns service, such as no-ip.com (but
there are others)? This would probably save you time. I run some test/trial
websites at home (anything "real" goes on an external server), and I use
no-ip so I don't have to worry should my IP address change (which it rarely
does). I then set up the DNS records to point not to my IP address (which
might change) but to the no-ip.com alias that in turn resolves to whatever
my current IP address is.

I know this isn't an answer to your posted question (which I can see has
already been answered), but I hope it helps.

How long have you had this domain? Sometimes it just takes time for it to show up properly. Give it a day or two and it will probably be ok.
