Hi, I'm setting up a website and have a couple of queries.

Are links still as big as they used to be, re google being interested in a
website?

And do you know of any good software that handles sending out link requests
and managing the whole process? Ideally freeware.

How would the use of such a script be different than spamming?

Focus on content and forget about the links. If your content is good,
the links will take care of themselves. If your content stinks, you
don't deserve the links.

I have hundreds of people linking to my site, and I have never asked for
a link. About 1/3 of the new traffic to my site comes from people
telling people about it off-line.

It is all about content.

unsure where spam comes into things, Scott. I am not referring to a m***
emailer. I hate spam.

I'm talking about a program that I can use to keep a note of who is
linking to me, who I have asked for a reciprical link, etc.

I agree with you re content. Thanks for that info re you never having
asked for a link.

Does it take you long to grow your visitor numbers? Months, years?

It doesn't have to be m***. When I get a request for a link, I don't
care how many other people got the same request. Off to the junk pile it
goes.

I don't know of any such program. If I did, I wouldn't use it. The only
way I have any clue about the number of people linking to me is from my
web stats. The only way I link to anyone else is if I decide that a link
to that site will improve the user experience for people visiting my
site. I don't do reciprocal links.

It all depends on the site, and how many visitors you expect to get. It
took me about 1 1/2 years to get to the point where I can live off of
the income from my site. But I offer a service that nobody else on the
internet provides the same way I do. Unless you also provide a unique
service, expect it to take a bit longer.

Just want to add. If you are making a site just to make money then please
dont.

Viper, you've piqued my curiosity, partly because I'm not sure what
you're saying.

Are you saying people shouldn't offer services for the purpose of
making money, or that people shouldn't set up sites to offer services,
or what?

You shouldn't set up a site with the soul purpose of making money if
that site offers no value to anybody but the site owner.

On this and other related NGs there has been a number of posts from
people who are under the impression that they can put up just any old
site, drive traffic to it, and make lots of money.

It doesn't work that way. Viper is encouraging the OP to come up with a
real business model and work at creating real value for other people.
That is how you make money on or off the net. If the OP can't do that,
then Viper is saying that the internet doesn't need his site added to
the noise.
