Im in the process of creating my own cl***ifieds website in the vein
of craigslist and gumtree and would like to collect feedback on what
makes these sites so popular, how they are being used and how they
could be bettered...

so if you have any comments on those topics then let me know.

Very simple. They were (among the) first, and/or they spent heavily on
marketing.

Good luck. Copycat sites virtually never make it unless you have deep
pockets and can afford to pay for lots of advertising. And even then,
most fail.

some might say they are popular but here in sunny England I, for one, hadn't
heard of it so had to google.
can't say it's pretty either ;p

I've clients with cl***ifieds for either "closed groups" or public
consumption.
They tend to like 68cl***ifieds [dot com] as a backend engine.

An enhanced system seems to have been developed by a chap whose nick on
their forum is Maffo.

For a site like Craigslist I don't think it would be that difficult to come
up with something that looked better or was maybe better organized... but
the number one issue you would have to address if you were looking to better
them would be: users.

This would be one of those projects where you will need a better plan than
"build the site, submit to google index, sit back and wait" which is pretty
much what most people perceive is the complete definition of launching a
website.

tell me about it im dissecting craigslist revenue streams and
reading everything i can about it before i move forwards - think
clarity of navigation is key and regionality - they tend to be
localised... i think in the UK the key is to make it a viable
alternative to ebay but dont know how to tackle payments just yet.

im not looking for instant success... im a realist
