Posting through googlegroups.com is the spammer's choice nowadays.
I have set my news reader filter to "red flag" every message id
containing "googlegroups.com."

Every newby sock puppet seems to come from googlegroups.com. They
write "I am new to the group." "I need more information." "I want to
join your group." "I have this widget that needs fixed." "Could one
of you who knows about this, help me find out if" blah blah blah.

Then the "helpful replies" come pouring in, right on que. The first
replies to show up inevitably have spammy links attached to them. So
the ignorant ones go "clickity click." That keeps the spammers coming
back for more.

Soon, those naive about spamming get roped in, believing these
googlegroups.com sock puppets to actually be a first time subscribers,
when all they are really doing is spamming. What a bunch of clowns.

Then, like you said, there is the "I just found this fantastic site"
spam. See how almost all of this originates from googlegroups.com.

The moral of the story is, please don't click on questionable or
spammy links. If we all stopped clicking on them, then the spammers
would get frustrated and go away. Please go away, spammers. We don't
want you, and we are not about to buy whatever you are selling.

If it is possible, all service providers should be required by law
to impose severe restrictions and penalties against commercial
spammers. If convicted, then the courts should levy stiff fines, and
possibly imprisonment, on their first offense.

Google should put a flashing warning on all googlegroups.com messages,
by adding a "Click at your own risk" disclaimer above every link, in
every message that originates from the googlegroups.com interface.
Like "WARNING: YOU ARE BEING SPAMMED!" blinking in bold red letters.

They have really done a number to many once valuable Usenet
communities. The number of OPs has gone down while the percentage of
spam has gone up. They have pretty well saturated the unmoderated ones
to the point where topic specific posts are virtually impossible to
pick out.

google.public.support.general is a good example. Look at the numbers :
http://groups.google.com/group/googl....general/about .
There is 10% the postings as compared to a year ago and when reading
through the messages, half are in Asian languages that don't translate
well; and when clicked through their links, nothing of value. This was
once a thriving community that provided tons of help to the m***es of
misinformed. It is a pity to just watch it rot away.

Not really hard, is it? I've done it twice completely by accident.

Everyone likes to crow a little, and there's no harm in that. My news of
the day is that my new site on Herbal Magick, http://www.herb-magic.com
, has risen up to number 58 for its best keyword term at google. The
result is probably unstable -- the site has been bouncing between 71 and
91 depending on which datacenter i accessed -- but it shows a good
trend, and i choose to look at it as a move in the right direction.
