Why waste your time begging others for something that you already have
yourself?
It is not volume of links that you need, it is search engine rankings
for niche keyphrases. One has litle to do with the other. Mind you, if
it is
PR you are seeking, then beg away with all your might.
Steer clear of reciprocal links and other linking schemes as they are
on the chopping block, in spite of their present moment of glory and
the huge number of linking strategists that support them.

My opinion is to concentrate on creating content that is worthy of a
link. If people link to it, great; if not, then concentrate on
creating unique high-quality content that is worthy of a link.
