Default How to learn the basics of creating and running a forum - 02-15-2008, 11:59 PM

Hi everyone!

I just purchased my site from Host Gator last week, and installed SMF using Fantastico. I've set-up my forum somewhat, but I can't seem to find a good step-by-step guide or book to teach me how to do everything. All I've read seems to be just bits and pieces, much of which I don't understand yet. Is there a good book, or seminar, or instructional video or magazine out there to guide me? I thought after I took the plunge it might be more intuitive than it has turned out to be so far. I often read about accessing the directory to get various things done, but I have no idea how to access the directory. I suppose it is something like a directory in Windows Explorer and I thought I could access it through my cPanel somehow. Also, I don't understand what all that stuff is in my cPanel.

Lots of questions, sorry. I appreciate any guidance - thank you very much!

Well, I since you have an SMF forum, I would start by going to there website, I'm sure they have a forum setup to help newbies. Next, I would find a couple of SMF forums that are already popular, become a member or those sites and then see how things run from the perspective of a user. Between those two things, you'll pretty much cover everything you need. Other than that, ask the people on this forum if you get stuck.

Well you came to the right place, ForumCare is here for that exact reason. There are no definitive guides to making a forum and getting it popular, in fact if there was I wouldn't listen to it. It all comes down to experience and for a part, luck. You just need to read whatever tips you can find on the internet, use some common sense and lauch yourself head first in to business.

Be sure to take your time. There's no point in getting burned out trying to get things perfect right off. It helps to break thing down into little steps so you might go though a couple of tutorials, make a note of where you left off, and come back to continue a day or two later so you don't get overwhelmed.

For a guide to the running of a forum, contact me. It was written by someone with several forums that are over 10 years old. The URL cannot be linked because some person who apparently doesn't know much about profanity controls has insanely blocked words that have "a" "s" and another "s" run together....such as:
***ert
***ume
***emble
***ess

They desperately need to fix that. Especially on a forum about running forums!

By the way, the number 1 way to irritate people and get them to dump your forum in favour of another is the above mentioned form of controlling profanity.

Very true, I tend to trust the maturity of the members of my forum rather than censor things they try to say. I've visited a number of forums where a huge number of everyday things have been censored out because they contain words that could be bad, as we see above. It's VERY annoying and it's something to avoid.
