Default Avatars - 03-04-2008, 09:47 AM

I joined tried to register with a new forum yesterday, but it insisted that I load an avatar. I've no problem with avatars, but I could see no valid reason why it was necessary for that particular forum. I abandoned the registration on the basis that if I were being dictated to that early in our relationship then I'd probably not enjoy it.

That's strange. Didn't the forum provide avatars, since they felt they should be required? So many forums limit the size of any picture you would use so much that it's a pain to resize anything a use might already have.

That's a new one on me. I've never seen a forum that required an avatar. Weird.

There were avatars available to choose or you could use your own, but I didn't see how it would add to the users experience to have one.

Sometimes I use one elsewhere, sometimes I don't. Mostly I don't, because I'm too lazy to load my own & don't like 'sharing'.

LOL, I have one i use most places I post on, but it's too big for some, and if they don't have an auto reduction facility attached, then i can't be bothered to load up something else. Agree with Green Moo about 'sharing'.

Thought the whole point of an avatar was to be an individual statement about you personally. How can you do that if 30 of you have the same one?

It sounds like the owner of the forum believes the avatars will attract more users. They do make a forum look like it has a lot of activity.
