The only disadvantage that I can see is when a heated debate puts off new posters.

I can see that. A new user that doesn't know anyone might be afraid to post, in fear of insulting a user thats been there for a while. As a mod you can add posts here and there encouraging new posters, and defend them if it seems like multiple people are coming down on them.

Yeah this happened to me a lot many times. Whenever I come across a new forum, it takes a while for me to just post a single statement, always I try to cross check my lines so that they are apt and not hurting others opinions or feelings.

It's funny. Over the years I have found that for every new poster that is put off by heated debate, 20 more are inclined to finally jump in and post.
